The Path to Early Retirement: Getting Started

Photo by Frans Van Heerden from PexelsIt was always my dream to retire early.

I recall first thinking about it in my 20’s when an investment company ran an extensive ad campaign in Canada called “Freedom 55”. YES!! That’s what I wanted!! The freedom to do what I want, when I want to…and not at 65 like was always drilled into our heads…but 55!!! HELL YEAH!! So began my journey to Financial Independence on the Path to Early Retirement.

Now those commercials were cool and all, but really they just planted the seed. And I was going to let it grow into a dream retirement as early as possible. Cool. But now what? (awkward pause) Continue reading

“Go to School. Work. Retire. Die.”

That’s pretty much life in a nutshell. For most of us these are all mandatory steps that we all must go through in our journey through life. Some are controllable…and some are not. You’re Going to Retire WHEN??!!

surprisedI remember when I was much younger watching those wonderful Freedom-55 ads on television. I was convinced then and there that that was going to be me.

There was no way I was going to be working until I was 65, retire, and die a year later.

Nosiree, I was going to make sure that I was going to retire early enough that I could enjoy the bulk of my remaining years while my health was good and I could still remember my own name. But now my goal is even better: to retire at 50.  Continue reading

Winter in Canada is Great!!

Unless you don’t ski. Or snowmobile. Or generally don’t enjoy any other such activity that involves being out in -300 degree Celsius weather. Or shoveling snow every 2nd day (and sometimes multiple times in the same day).

Or dressing in 4 layers of clothing and warming up the car for 10 minutes before you go anywhere. Or maybe having days with less than 8 hours of sunlight. But other than that, for me winter in Alberta is…well, just plain miserable.

Don’t get me wrong; a clear prairie day with frost on the trees is breathtakingly beautiful.  Continue reading
